Swiss and the Carolinas

New Bern, NC
Founded in 1710, New Bern was settled by Swiss and German adventurers led by Baron Christopher de Graffenried from Bern. read more  

Purrysburg, SC
Purrysburg was named after Jean Pierre Purry, a Swiss pioneer who led the first settlers there in 1732. The settlers were primarily Swiss Protestants from Neuchatel and Geneva. read more  

Beech Island , SC
Many Swiss settlers were lured to South Carolina by pamphlets the government printed giving glorious description of the land and rivers. In 1737, a group of 200 from Appenzell, Switzerland, led by John Tobler, came to settle in New Windsor. About 40 died during the first summer. read more
